Tonight was the second joint project between Whitney and myself. I drew the sketch this time, while Whitney handled all the painting in watercolors. The subject for this illustration was a character that I hadn’t introduced yet to the Chronicles of Ademar website: Nadja, the red wolf alchemist. She doesn’t appear in the series until the second volume (which will be about issue 6 or 7, estimated), so I hadn’t published any images of her final design prior to now. In the past renditions of the story she was actually a fox, and was much more slim in the waist while bigger in… other areas. Needless to say, I decided to make her more realistically proportioned, so I gave her more weight and curves to balance things out.
Anywho, hit the jump to view the process video — a full three hours this time, as it was an extended recording to fit the entire project into a single show — as well as a scan of the final product.

Part one of the painting of the second page of Ademar was done tonight on camera. I managed to get probably halfway through the page in one sitting tonight. It’s going to take a bit longer than the first page took since there’s a bit more detail — as well as multiple panels — but I shouldn’t have any problem getting through at least a couple pages by the end of this week. I doubt I’ll be able to finish all three. We’ll see.
Check out the video after the jump for the painting, a preview of a really awesome dinner, and a bit of piano at the end.

As I had anticipated, I was able to finish painting the entire first page of Ademar in tonight’s session. This means my original estimate of 6-8 hours for the production of a single page of Ademar — from pencils to finished watercolors — was right on the money. If I can keep to this speed for the rest of the pages, I should be able to complete the first issue within two months’ production time (keeping in mind the amount of time I actually have at home — I do have a full-time job, too).
Catch the video from tonight’s session, for those who weren’t able to attend, after the jump.

Tonight, we begin the painting of the Chronicles of Ademar. The opening page is first on the slab, with the base layers of ink wash being put down before anything else. In two hours, roughly 75% of the washes were finished. I also took the opportunity to turn the session into a tutorial on my methods/approach to painting with ink wash (specifically with the technique I’ll be using to paint Ademar).
Hit the jump to see the video, for those who missed seeing it live. I won’t be scanning this page in until it is complete, so this will be the only way to see the progress at this point:
